See-Do or See-Be

“Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.’”
— (John 5:19, NASB95)

Example of a see-do life:

One day, you look at your cupboards and discover there is no food. You and your children are looking at lack. You dig around for a dime to help relieve the hunger.

Example of a see-be life:

Or, in the same situation, you find your knees and bend them before God, who supplies all your needs. Then you get up and set the table.

This actually happened to Linda, me, and our two sons in the mid-1970s. Discovering we were out of everything, Linda said, ‘Father, if you don’t feed us, we won’t eat.’ Within an hour, four large paper sacks packed full of food we never could afford were on our counter being unpacked.
“So do not be like see-doers but see-receivers; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” — (Matthew 6:8, DLC)

One way of doing this is to sweat a lot,
and the other is to rest a lot.

Agent:

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” — (Psalm 23:1, NASB95)

Goal:

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” — (Psalm 23:1, NASB95)

Action:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — (Philippians 4:6–7, NASB95)

Conclusion:

Trust God. I did not say for you to trust God for things. I said, "Trust God." His intentions for you may not fit your agenda, but He has created you to fit His.

Key Verses:

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!’” -- (Psalm 91:1–2, NASB95)

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — (Matthew 6:31–33, NASB95)

“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — (Philippians 4:19, NASB95)

Questions:

  1. Do you know God's gift to you is Himself?
  2. If so, why do you struggle with neediness?
  3. Can you rest in God's abilities?
  4. What can you do to hinder God from doing His will?
